Prop Firm Consistency Rule: Best-Day Limits Explained

How the prop firm consistency rule works, which programs use it (FTMO, Topstep, Apex, FundedNext and more) and how much profit you need after a big day.

A prop firm consistency rule caps how much of your total profit may come from your single best trading day: if the cap is 50%, your best day must be 50% or less of the profit it is measured against, or you cannot pass, or cannot be paid, until the rest of your trading catches up.

It is also called the best day rule or consistency requirement (in Spanish, regla de consistencia). The idea is the same everywhere, the details are not: some firms apply it in the evaluation, some only on the funded account or one payout cycle, and a few use a fixed dollar cap per day instead. This page gives the formula, a table of programs, the arithmetic after a big day, and the habits that keep you inside the limit.

All firm figures below were checked against each firm's official rules on 26 September 2026. Rules change often, so confirm every number on the firm's own page before you trade.

How is the consistency rule calculated?

The standard version is one division:

Consistency ratio = Best day profit ÷ Total profit
Rule is met when: Consistency ratio ≤ X%

X is the firm's cap: 50%, 40%, 35% and so on. "Total profit" is not the same at every firm, and that is where most surprises come from:

  • FTMO Challenge 1-Step compares the best day with the profit of your positive days. Losing days are not subtracted from that figure.
  • Apex Trader Funding (Apex 4.0) compares the largest day with the profit since the last payout, and the largest day must be less than 50%, not equal to it.
  • Topstep Trading Combine compares the best day with the profit target, not with what you have made.

Rearrange the formula and you get the number traders actually need: the minimum total profit that a given best day requires.

Minimum total profit = Best day ÷ X%

A $3,000 best day under a 50% rule needs at least $3,000 ÷ 0.50 = $6,000 of total profit. Under a 40% rule it needs $3,000 ÷ 0.40 = $7,500.

Is the consistency rule a breach or a waiting period?

At the firms that spell it out, it is a waiting period, not a breach. FTMO states this directly for the 1-Step Best Day Rule: it decides whether you pass or get a Reward, and breaking it does not fail the account. Topstep's Combine works the same way in effect: if your best day goes above the cap, the target rises. At Apex the funded rule is a payout condition. For other programs, check the firm's wording of what happens.

That makes the rule less dangerous than a daily loss limit, but it has a real cost. Every extra day you need to dilute one big day is another day exposed to your max loss and drawdown limits. If you have not read how that floor moves, the guide to prop firm daily drawdown explains the daily side.

Which prop firms have a consistency rule?

The table lists each program's best-day cap as verified on 26 September 2026. "None" means the firm states there is no such rule. "Not verified" means we could not confirm it from an official source. The full rule set for each firm is on the prop firm rules comparison page.

What are the different types of consistency rule?

The table hides five different mechanics.

Evaluation rule vs funded rule

Only a few programs apply a best-day cap while you are being evaluated: FTMO Challenge 1-Step (50%), Blue Guardian 1 Step Nano (50%), FXIFY Lightning Challenge (30%) and the Topstep Combine (55% of the target). Most others introduce the cap on the funded account, where it decides whether a payout is approved.

Hard cap vs rising target

At Topstep, the Combine figure is fixed at 55% of the profit target (it was 50% until early September 2026). If your best day is larger, Topstep raises the target rather than failing you. Topstep's own help article on consistency explains how the new target is set, so read it before you plan around it.

Payout-cycle-only rules

FundedNext Stellar 2-Step and Stellar Lite apply their 40% best-day rule only on the On-Demand payout cycle, which is the cycle with the higher split (90% versus the 80% default on Stellar 2-Step). Funding Pips 2 Step Standard applies 35% on its on-demand and monthly cycles. The rule is part of the trade-off you choose at purchase.

Fixed dollar caps per day

Some programs do not use a ratio at all. FXIFY Two Phase (Pro) has no best-day percentage and instead sets a $4,000 maximum gain per day. Goat Funded Trader 1-Step and 2-Step Standard set a $3,000 daily profit cap on the funded account. E8 Pro sets a 2% daily profit cap: profit above 2% of the initial balance is removed at rollover, on both the challenge and the funded account.

A worked example for E8 Pro: on a $100,000 account the cap is 2% × $100,000 = $2,000. A $3,000 day leaves $1,000 above the cap, and that $1,000 is removed at rollover.

Profit concentration rules

Funding Pips adds a Profit Concentration Policy on $25K and larger accounts. It is measured per trade idea, not per day: if one trade idea makes more than 60% of the profit target, you need 4 profitable days before each reward.

How much do I need to make after a big day?

Use the rearranged formula, then subtract what you already have.

Minimum total profit = Best day ÷ X%
Still needed = Minimum total profit − Current total profit

Worked example 1: FTMO Challenge 1-Step, $100,000. The profit target is 10%, or $10,000. You make $6,000 on day one, then $2,000 over the next few days. Your positive days' profit is $8,000.

  • Minimum positive days' profit = $6,000 ÷ 0.50 = $12,000
  • Still needed = $12,000 − $8,000 = $4,000

Even after you reach the $10,000 target, you need another $2,000 of positive days before you pass. Because FTMO's measure is positive days' profit, a losing day does not raise the requirement, but it does still reduce your balance and your room above the max loss.

Worked example 2: Apex funded (PA) account. Since your last payout you have $2,600 of profit, and the largest day was $1,400.

  • The largest day must be below 50% of profit, so profit must be more than $1,400 ÷ 0.50 = $2,800
  • Still needed: more than $2,800 − $2,600 = $200

Worked example 3: FundedNext Stellar 2-Step, On-Demand cycle. Best day $3,000, total profit $4,500.

  • Minimum total profit = $3,000 ÷ 0.40 = $7,500
  • Still needed = $7,500 − $4,500 = $3,000

The trap: a new best day moves the line. Suppose you are on Funding Pips 2 Step Standard on the monthly cycle (35%). Your best day is $2,000 and your total is $3,000.

  • Minimum total = $2,000 ÷ 0.35 = $5,714.29, so $2,714.29 still needed
  • If the next day makes $2,500, that becomes the new best day and the total is $5,500
  • New minimum = $2,500 ÷ 0.35 = $7,142.86, so $1,642.86 still needed

You made $2,500 and only closed $1,071.43 of the gap. Every day larger than your current best day resets part of the work. The days that clear a consistency rule fastest are the ones just below your best day.

Consistency rule calculator: minimum total profit by best day

The mini table below applies Best day ÷ X% to three best-day sizes. Figures are rounded up to the next dollar, because under a "less than or equal" rule a value one cent short does not count.

Best day55%50%40%35%30%25%20%15%
$1,000$1,819$2,000$2,500$2,858$3,334$4,000$5,000$6,667
$2,000$3,637$4,000$5,000$5,715$6,667$8,000$10,000$13,334
$3,000$5,455$6,000$7,500$8,572$10,000$12,000$15,000$20,000

Read it from the program you are on. A $3,000 day on Goat Funded Trader Instant HERO (15%) needs $20,000 of total profit. The same day on an FTMO 1-Step (50%) needs $6,000. Remember the Topstep Combine column works differently: its 55% is applied to the profit target, not to your total.

What is the maximum I can make in one day?

Turn the formula around once more. If you know the total profit you are aiming for, the largest day that keeps you inside the rule is:

Daily profit cap = X% × Planned total profit

Worked example: Topstep Trading Combine, 50K. The profit target is $3,000. Under the 55% rule, the largest day that stays within it is 55% × $3,000 = $1,650.

Worked example: Funding Pips 2 Step Standard, monthly cycle. You plan a $4,000 payout. Under 35%, the largest day is 35% × $4,000 = $1,400. If you plan a $6,000 payout instead, it is $2,100.

The lower the cap, the more evenly your profit has to be spread. At 15% or 20% you need at least seven or five days at the cap to reach any total, and realistically more, because not every day will be a full one.

How do you stay inside the consistency rule?

None of these habits make a trade more likely to win. They only make your profit distribution fit the rule.

  • Set a daily profit cap before the session. Work it out from the formula above and write it down. When closed profit for the day reaches it, stop opening trades. Decide in advance what happens to open trades at the cap.
  • Keep position size steady. A consistency breach usually comes from one oversized trade, not from an unusually good day of normal trades. If you risk 0.5% per trade every day, your daily results stay within a narrower range. The FTMO lot size calculator, the FundedNext calculator and the Topstep calculator convert a fixed risk into a lot or contract size, and they work without an account.
  • Be careful around news. A NAS100 or XAU/USD move on a high-impact release can turn a normal 0.5% trade into a 3% day. Several firms also cap news profit separately: Goat Funded Trader caps profit from trades within 5 minutes of red-folder news at 1% of initial balance, and FundedNext counts 40% of news-window profit on funded accounts.
  • Do not size up after a big day. Trading bigger to reach the requirement sooner raises the chance of a new best day, which moves the line, and of a losing streak that eats into your max drawdown.
  • Pick the program that fits your data. If your results come in a few large days, a program with no best-day cap, such as FTMO Challenge 2-Step, may fit better than a 15% or 20% cap.

How do you check your own consistency ratio?

Your broker statement gives you trades, not days. To see your ratio you need daily P&L, your best day and your total per payout cycle.

A trading journal can show daily P&L, the size of your largest days and how they compare with your average day. The guide to trading performance metrics covers the related numbers, such as average win, largest win and profit factor. In Fips, MT4 and MT5 accounts sync through a read-only investor password, so Fips can read history but never place or close a trade. Prop firm rule tracking inside the journal is coming soon. Frequently asked questions

What is the FTMO best day rule?

On the FTMO Challenge 1-Step, your best day must be 50% or less of your positive days' profit for you to pass or to get a Reward. It is not a breach: if one day is too large, you keep trading until the positive days catch up. FTMO Challenge 2-Step (Standard and Swing) has no best-day rule. Checked against FTMO's official rules on 26 September 2026; confirm on FTMO's page.

What is the Topstep consistency rule?

In the Trading Combine, your best day must be 55% or less of the profit target. It was 50% until early September 2026. If the best day is larger, the target rises. On the Express Funded Account, the Consistency payout path uses 40%.

What is the Apex consistency rule?

Apex 4.0 evaluations have no consistency rule. On the funded (PA) account, your largest day must be less than 50% of the profit made since your last payout before a payout is approved. A $1,400 largest day needs more than $2,800 of profit in that period.

How do I calculate the consistency rule?

Divide your best day by your total profit. If the result is at or below the firm's cap, you meet the rule. To find the total you need, divide the best day by the cap: a $3,000 best day needs $6,000 under 50% and $7,500 under 40%. Check what your firm counts as total profit: positive days, profit since the last payout, or the profit target.

Does a losing day reset the consistency rule?

No. A losing day does not change your best day. Depending on the firm, it either leaves the total unchanged (FTMO 1-Step counts positive days' profit) or reduces the net total, which raises the profit you still need. A new best day is what moves the requirement up.

Can I fail a challenge because of the consistency rule?

At FTMO 1-Step, the Topstep Combine and Apex funded accounts, the best-day rule delays a pass or a payout rather than failing the account. For the other programs, read how the firm words the consequence. The risk is indirect: every extra day you trade to meet it is another day exposed to the daily loss limit and the max drawdown. Read your firm's wording, because some programs pair the rule with other conditions, such as Funding Pips' 4 profitable days under its Profit Concentration Policy.
